Molecular (PCR)

Med-Lake Laboratory’s Molecular Department conducts diagnostic testing for infectious diseases using both commercial and in-house developed assays. A notable advantage of our laboratory is our ability to swiftly create and validate innovative tests and panels in-house. This enables us to respond rapidly to emerging pathogens and disease states as they present themselves. Equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and expert staff, our laboratory produces test results within 24 hours after receipt.

Respiratory Pathogens

Our comprehensive respiratory panels and single pathogen tests can accurately detect a range of viruses and bacterial infections responsible for respiratory illnesses such as Influenza, Covid-19, Bordetella pertussis, Rhinovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and more. By analyzing a single sample, we can simultaneously identify multiple infections and provide you with a detailed qualitative report of the specific pathogens present.

UTI Pathogens

Our UTI pathogen panel is able to detect a large number of microorganisms including bacteria and fungi from a single sample. By casting a wider net, our PCR tests are able to detect polymicrobial infections which is difficult, if not impossible, by traditional cultures exhibiting bacterial overgrowth.

STI Pathogens

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a significant global health concern, with reported incidence rates increasing annually. If left untreated, STIs can lead to severe health complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and chronic pelvic pain. Our STI panels provide a rapid and comprehensive diagnostic solution, allowing for the simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens. By accurately identifying the causative agent(s), healthcare providers can offer prompt and targeted treatment, minimizing the risk of complications and promoting better patient outcomes.

Nail Fungus

By detecting the specific genetic material of the fungal pathogen, our nail fungus panel can distinguish between different types of nail fungi and guide appropriate treatment options. This approach offers a non-invasive and efficient diagnostic tool for patients with suspected nail fungal infections.

Antibiotic Resistance Gene Detection

The ability of pathogens to develop antibiotic resistance has significantly compromised the effectiveness of antibiotics. When a pathogen genetically adapts to the drug(s) designed to destroy it, antibiotic resistance occurs. These genetic variations act as defense mechanisms, rendering the drug(s) ineffective. Med-Lake provides testing services that identify the specific genetic variations responsible for antibiotic resistance in pathogens. This information is crucial for healthcare providers to choose an appropriate antibiotic regimen that will effectively combat the infection.
